The author maintains that the solution to losing weight and preventing diabetes, as well as heart disease, stroke, dementia and cancer, is balanced insulin levels.

The book is aimed at those with diabesity – type 2 diabetes and obesity – but it is also good advice for anyone who wants to boost their health and avoid lifestyle diseases.

Hyman calls our sedentary, processed-food lifestyles “the modern plague” and busts the myths about diabetes that, he says, keep us sick. Type 2 diabetes is reversible with the right lifestyle and dietary interventions, he says.

Hyman addresses food addiction as well as food manufacturing and marketing.

He outlines seven steps to wellness: boost nutrition, regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, improve digestion, maximise detoxification, enhance energy metabolism and soothe your mind.

Although rich in information, well researched and a weighty read in some parts, the book also gives practical help through questionnaires to assist you to identify your problems. There is a step-by-step guide on how to take action.

A six-week action plan includes recipes, tips and shopping lists. It could convert you to a new way of eating and living. – Daily News
