London - Eating prunes helps boost weak bones, according to a new US study.

Research based on 160 post-menopausal women with osteopenia - low bone density - found that those who ate prunes every day for a year had stronger bones compared to those who ate dried apples.

The participants were also given a calcium and vitamin D supplement. Their bone mineral density was measured before and after the study along with blood tests.

The results showed prunes were linked to significantly increased bone density in the elbow and spine compared with apples.

It’s thought prunes help by reducing the levels of a compound called sclerostin, which makes bones less dense. - Daily Mail
