London - As you follow your dog out the door to take it for a walk one wet evening, it may be of some small comfort to know that your pet makes you appear more loveable.

At least that’s what researchers are saying.

They found that 52 percent of people believe people with dogs are friendlier than the average person they meet while out walking, and that 46 percent find that walking a dog is one of the easiest ways to make friends.

Forty-six percent of Britons also agree that loving animals makes a person more attractive.

TV presenter Ben Fogle met his wife Marina while out with a dog in Hyde Park in London. He said: “I cannot stress enough the physical, psychological and social benefits of owning a pet. Dogs get you out in the fresh air in all weathers. Who knows where Marina and I would be without ours!”

The survey by insurer Direct Line showed that 29 percent of dog owners have met lifelong friends while walking their pet.
