London - Friendship may be priceless – but that doesn’t stop us splashing out on our closest pals.

Britons spent an average of £158 (about R2 700) on gifts for their closest friend in the past year, a survey reveals.

However, it found that half of Britons worry about the expense, which is understandable given the cost of Christmas and birthday gifts for a best friend over a lifetime adds up to £6 800 (about R118 000).

The Post Office poll showed a sixth of adults go into the red to buy a friend a present. People typically spend £62 on Christmas gifts for their closest friend and £47 on birthday gifts. Other costs include housewarmings and weddings. - Daily Mail
