London - Royal Mail analysed more than 200 000 youngsters’ letters to produce a “top ten” based on their wish lists.

The multi-coloured building blocks – invented in 1949 – beat modern rivals such as Peppa Pig and Microsoft’s Xbox One console to take the Christmas crown.

Demand for Lego was so high it even pushed One Direction merchandise into second place. And the latest version of the Furby – widely hailed as 2013’s “must-have” Christmas item – only managed third place.

The Xbox was the only gadget to make an appearance, while dolls proved a hit with Monster High characters and Sofia Talking Doll taking fifth and sixth place.

But other traditional toys did not fare so well – bikes and teddy bears were both absent from the list.
