Cape Town - Collect R200, and go straight to Cape Town.
Well, not just yet. The city is vying to be included in the Monopoly board game’s 80th anniversary edition.
Cape Town is competing against Marrakesh in Morocco, Djerba in Tunisia and Algiers in Algeria. The four are the only African cities on the list. New York, London, Paris, Sydney and Hong Kong are also vying for some real estate space on the board.
In celebration of the anniversary, Hasbro has teamed up with BuzzFeed to ask fans to choose which great cities should be featured as property spaces in the new Monopoly Here & Now: World Edition game.
Fans have until March 4 to select from a list of global destinations that will be featured in the game to be sold globally this year. From London to Cape Town, fans can rally behind their home towns, favourite vacation spots or cities they feel they have to see, by sharing the vote on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #VoteMonopoly, as well as engage with BuzzFeed content featuring the cities in the vote.
Fans can also send in additional locations not included in the initial list of destinations, and the cities with the most submissions will be featured as the two brown property spaces in the new game.
“This innovative campaign demonstrates how we continue to keep the Monopoly brand relevant by empowering our fans to help create today’s game,” said Jonathan Berkowitz, vice-president of global marketing for gaming at Hasbro.
The final list of cities that will be featured in the Monopoly Here & Now games is expected to be announced on March 19, World Monopoly Day and the Monopoly brand’s official birthday.
The World Edition game will be available from September and will feature landmark tokens and new gameplay where players race round the board to visit as many locations as possible, collecting passport stamps along the way.
Players will collect cash from visitor fees when opponents land on their locations, and the first player to fill their passport wins.
