London - Around one in 20 parents mistakenly believe that a packet of crisps counts towards their children’s ‘five-a-day’ portions of fruit or vegetables, a survey has revealed.

Researchers found that 33 percent couldn’t correctly identify five portions, with one in four counting jacket potatoes, one in seven suggesting mashed potato and one in nine counting vitamin pills as one of their children’s five fruit and vegetable servings.

The study, carried out by snack firm Fruit Heroes, claimed that parents are ‘confused’ by conflicting guidelines.

Nutritional expert Dr Sarah Schenker said: ‘Nutrition can be difficult to understand when parents are faced with so much confusing information.’
