London - Children born to women with fertility problems are more at risk of suffering psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, warn researchers.

The risk of mental problems – ranging from eating disorders to autism – is one third higher overall than in children whose mothers did not have any trouble conceiving.

The largest study of its kind found the increased risk persisted into adulthood, making it a lifelong effect – with as many as one in 50 psychiatric problems linked to a mother’s infertility.

The Danish study found that children born to women with fertility problems had a 40 percent greater risk of suffering behavioural and emotional disorders – including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – and a 25 percent greater risk of suffering from schizophrenia. - Daily Mail
