London - Parents can now check whether their child is swimming safely – by using their iPhone.

A company has invented a headband, worn by the child, which sends a wireless alert to the parent’s phone if the youngster is underwater for too long.

A wristband version is also available, designed for children who are non-swimmers and might fall into a pool by mistake.

The bands contain a sensor which transmits a warning via Bluetooth to compatible devices. Apple iPads, iPhones or iPods can be set up to receive the audiovisual alarms.

The waterproof device, created by a company called iSwimband, costs around £60 (about R1 000) has an effective range of 100 feet.

The company says it is important the parent knows the general location their child is in because the device does not yet have GPS tracking.

A spokesperson added: “While nothing can replace diligent human supervision, iSwimband provides you and your loved ones with an added layer of protection around water.” - Daily Mail
