Pretoria - Parents who applied for admission for the 2016 academic year will find out next week if their children have been accepted to their schools of choice.

The applications for admission into Gauteng public schools started on April 21 and closed on May 26.

For the first time this year, parents were able to apply online instead of standing in long queues outside schools.

Provincial education spokeswoman Phumla Sekhonyane said the department was still adding up the numbers to see how many parents had applied.

“The department is managing a dual process with the manual and online applications. The capturing of the applications and updating of the database is ongoing but the system has recorded over 40 000 applications so far,” she said.

Sekhonyane said schools were in the process of finalising the capturing of the manual applications. She added that the placement period for applicants would start from June 17.

The department had in recent years initiated an early application process so as to avoid late applications in January. There were almost 30 000 late applications for the current school year, forcing the department to supply additional classrooms in high-demand areas.

Sekhonyane said schools were already receiving late applications.

It was, however, unclear how many late applications had been received because officials were still processing those received on time. She reminded parents to ensure that the schools they applied in had given them waiting list numbers.
