Durban - As special days are sometimes wont, they creep up on you, leaving you scrambling to secure a table at a good restaurant, or hoping to find a place for special activities.

The Independent on Saturday brings you a few last-minute gift ideas:

* The Savage Flux remote control car, mounted on disproportionately large wheels, runs off new lithium polymer batteries that can run for more or less 10 minutes.

“Depending on how it’s driven,” said Dean Steenmans, who sells them at his family business, Denkit Hobbies, in Springfield. The store is a popular drop-in spot for dads and sons, where all manner of gadgets and toys can be found.

Remote control devices can guide the Savage Flux from as far as 500m to a kilometre away.

“But there’s not much point in playing with it beyond 200m away because then you won’t be able to see it.”

While its without the “sound and smell” of its petrol-powered equivalent it has more power thanks to its new brushless motor, says Steenmans.

For petrolheads who want an equivalent vehicle that runs on 95 unleaded petrol, there’s the Savage XL Octane. “The advantage of the petrol make is that it gives sound and smell. It’s more realistic.”

It marks a departure within the Monster truck range from the smaller nitro engines. With a tank capacity of 200ml, it is able to reach speeds of around 75km/h.

The Savage XL Octane sells for R12 750 and the Savage Flux costs R11 500.

* At Makro we saw several items dad might like.

For the chilly weather, he would look stylish in a Campmaster softshell hooded jacket (R599). With a number of pockets there’s plenty of space for keys, phones and a wallet.

There’s also a Philips electric shaver set for R799.

However, dads will always be boys looking for another cool item, and a Power cap may be just the thing. It’s an ordinary peak cap with built-in LED lights in front – definitely handy during load shedding, but also useful when fishing or camping at night (R299).

If you want to give your dad a way to let off a little steam, a punching bag is a good way to work off the day’s stress and keep fit. An Everlast punch bag is R549.

And if entertaining is dad’s thing, a Keter Cool Bar (R1 299) will make him feel like an on-trend entertainer. This bar comes with a cooler for drinks and a mini table for people to set their drinks on.
