London - It is “the chat” dads, and teenagers, dread most but a study suggests talking with your children about the birds and the bees does make them more likely to practice safe sex – and it’s better still if done by Mom.

Daughters benefit more than sons when parents discuss contraception and risky sexual conduct, says analysis of more than 25 000 teenagers over 30 years.

Research found family sex chats led to far safer behaviour. Under 25s make up more than six in ten chlamydia cases in the UK, more than 140 000 new patients annually.

Dr Laura Widman, of the Teen Health Lab at North Carolina State University, said her study suggests “communication with parents – particularly among mothers and girls – has a protective effect on adolescent contraceptive and condom use.”

The results are published in JAMA Pediatrics.
