Cape Town - People are so crazy about a tiny plastic toy they get when spending a certain amount of money at a national retailer that they have turned to an online classified site to swop or sell their Stikeez to make up a set.

Gumtree’s head of marketing, Claire Cobbledick, said enterprising entrepreneurs and parents were selling or swopping the figurines.

The 1.5cm-high figurines came in a range of colours and people are clamouring to get at least one of each to complete a set. Cobbledick said people were paying up to R10 for one.

“The average seems to be about R10 a Stikeez, while complete collections are going for about R200. Many users prefer to swop rather than sell,” Cobbledick said.

It seemed the sellers were extremely successful. Cobbledick said about 20 new ads had gone up on Monday. “Most of them took down their ads on the same day because the items had been sold or swopped,” she said.

Pick 'n Pay customers get one figurine for every R150 they spend.

Shopper Andrea Matthews, 30, got two Stikeez on Tuesday. Matthews said she had not been aware of the promotion, but she was sure her children would love them.

“They will need more of these toys and this means coming back to the store more often,” she said.
