London - As plenty of parents know only too well, getting a young child to sleep is not an easy task.

So spare a thought for Maryann Battersby, whose three-year-old son, Aaron, rarely slept through the night.

But after years trying of different methods to help him sleep well, it seems his mother has finally found the solution – half a banana at bedtime.

Miss Battersby and partner Matthew Hopkins, both 34, tried everything to help their son get a normal night’s sleep.

Health professionals recommended cures that included soothing music and orange lights, a heavy quilt on Aaron’s bed and even changing the decor in his room – but nothing worked.

It was Vicki Dawson, a sleep expert based at Aaron’s nursery in Rotherham, south Yorkshire, who hit on the solution – for Aaron to eat half a banana before bed.

Miss Battersby was amazed at the results, with her son now regularly sleeping right through the night.

Bananas are a source of magnesium and potassium, which help to relax muscles.

They also contain tryptophan, an essential amino acide that converts to serotonin and melatonin, the brain’s key calming hormones. - Daily Mail
