Cape Town - Few of us have the cellar space – or patience – to tuck away wines that we know will benefit from a few years maturation.

At Simonsig, they have both, and occasionally open up their cellars and invite connoisseurs to come and browse, taste and, of course, buy wines that have reached optimum maturity.

The second Simonsig Vintage Wine Day takes place on Saturday, August 16, at the estate from 11am, where tastings of Kaapse Vonkel, going back to 2001, and older vintages of the Redhill pinotage and Heirloom shiraz, are among the venerable labels to sample.

A masterclass tasting, hosted by cellarmaster Johan Malan and winemaker Hannes Meyer, costs R50, while entrance tickets to the farm cost R150. Delicious fare from their Cuvée restaurant will tempt. Children enter free, accompanied by an adult. Book through webtickets.co.za or at the door.

* Vintage wine and venison are on the menu at La Motte’s Pierneef restaurant on Thursday,August 7 from 6.30pm. Food historian Hetta van Deventer-Terblanche will chat about venison before the four-course dinner, paired with venerable vintages, is served. Cost: R490. To book, e-mail [email protected] or call 021 876 8800.
