London - It may look like a humble wine cooler, but this high-tech gadget can make cheap wine taste better.

The Sonic Decanter uses high-frequency sound waves to speed up the aging process – breaking down preservatives, softening tanning and releasing aromas not normally found in young wines.

It takes 15 minutes to improve the taste of white wine, while red wine takes 20 minutes as its structure is more complex. The decanter can also be used to reinvigorate a half-finished bottle.

The project is the brainchild of Michael Coyne from Seattle, Washington. He said: “Traditionally wine takes years to age. With the Sonic Decanter you can achieve all those benefits in just minutes.’”

He added: “The majority of wine from shops costs less than £10 and the Sonic Decanter makes a drastic improvement. My team and I have created a device that makes any wine taste better.”

The invention is due to go into production in June next year and will cost around £150. It has already been put through its paces by US wine expert John Allen, who said: “It changed the wine in ways I hadn’t expected. It makes wines that have too much tannin softer and more flavourful, making them more gentle and drinkable.” - Daily Mail
