London - Britain’s tea-making credentials have been thrown into question – by a guidebook written by Americans.

How To Make Tea: The Science Behind the Leaf boasts that the US is now considered the “launch pad” for speciality tea interest and “vibrant tea culture”.

Co-author Brian Keating, from Seattle, said he hoped to do for tea what Starbucks – based in the city – has done for coffee.

The guide, complete with illustrations, advises drinkers on techniques such as how long to leave the teabag in the water – between two and five minutes, apparently.

It also tells readers about how much tea to use, steeping times and tea serving accoutrements.

Bill Gorman, director of the UK Tea and Infusions Association, said there are “a couple of fundamentals” that British tea drinkers have forgotten.

A study this year by the British Science Association concluded 80 percent of British people do not let tea brew long enough.
