London - Call it the burger backlash, but the latest food trend to sweep the country is bagels.

Whether served with salt beef, or the more traditional smoked salmon, cream cheese and lemon, they are making a comeback — and have never tasted better.

Originally from Poland, they were introduced by emigrating Jewish bakers to New York, where they really took off.

You can recreate the latest trend at home by filling them with pork, pickles, chilli and mayonnaise, or goat’s cheese, watermelon, radish and sorrel for a weekend lunch alternative to pizza or a burger.
