London - An abundance of celebrity chefs have encouraged men to throw off gender stereotypes and cook for their families.

But singer Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster said she still believes women belong in the kitchen – because cooking robs men of their masculinity.

The 44-year-old model shared her views about the traditional family as she appeared on ITV lunchtime show Loose Women.

She said she agreed with equal rights but was “a bit old fashioned” and believed in “the hunter gatherer, the macho man, looking after the family”.

Lancaster, who is Stewart’s third wife and mother of his two youngest children, said: “When men come home, it is more about being a part of the family, being with the children, spending more time with the children, being a strong role model. But I think going as far as cooking and putting the apron on, I think that takes [away] the masculinity and I would miss that.”

She added: “You have to accept there are differences. I think there has got to be an equal balance. If you are both working as hard as each other, both coming in at the same time, you need to share those roles.

“But men are from Mars and women are from Venus, testosterone, oestrogen, we’re different creatures. I think you’ve got to let men do it their way.”

Lancaster married the 70-year-old singer in 2007. Their sons are Alastair, nine, and Aiden, four. In total Stewart, who is worth an estimated £120-million, has eight children by five different women.
