Durban – An attempt is to be made on April 27 (Freedom Day) to beat the existing world record for the longest dining table in the world, has been accepted by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The attempt will be held at Greyville Racecourse.

There will be 2 000 diners. Restaurants, hotels, corporate companies, tourism bodies, clubs and charities as well as private individuals and families wanting to be part of the attempt, will be there.

The event starts at 2pm and each ticket costs R120 (excluding food) or R500 with food.

The event will include local and international entertainment and music as well as cuisine of the highest standards.

Alan Vels, executive director of the Greyville Exhibition and Events Company, said: “We want to try something novel while allowing the public to be part of the event. We will have national and international exposure”

The 2 100m dining table will be set out in the vast Greyville complex alongside the racetrack. Companies and individuals will be able to reserve as many spaces as they wish. Independent restaurants, hotels, corporate companies and caterers will be able to reserve spaces for customers and serve their own picnic-style cuisine on the day.

Proceeds of the event will be distributed to various charities in and around Greyville.

Individuals will be able to participate by reserving a space, and have the opportunity of selecting from a menu of picnic hampers. Every person participating will be listed as being part of the world record.

The event, which could become an annual occasion after the record attempt, has attracted much interest. Contact Mikaela Bairamis at 087 630 0128 or e-mail: [email protected].
