CAPE TOWN’S finest milk-tart bakers were engaged in a heated battle on Thursday morning on KFM’s Breakfast Show with Ryan O’Connor in a bid to get a chance to meet Bartolo “Buddy” Valastro, the Cake Boss, on Friday.

Valastro is an Italian-American celebrity chef, entrepreneur and reality television personality who owns Carlo’s Bakery, which has bakeries in New Jersey and Las Vegas.

The celebrity baker will be at the KFM studio on Friday to meet the best milk-tart maker in the Cape Town, who will present his tart. Out of the original group of nominees, four were chosen to participate in a competition at the radio station on Thursday.

After the judges, comprising members of the Breakfast team and Lance Whitten of the Cape Argus, tasted the four milk tarts, they pronounced the Ons Plaaskombuis entry the best in the business.

Ons Plaaskombuis owner Jacques le Roux said the store owed its win to Stella Coetzee, who bakes for them.

“Credit must go to Stella. She is the one who makes this milk tart, but at our store we like to preserve old farm stall traditions,” said Le Roux.

The other contestants were Pure Pancakes from Somerset West who came second, Classic Bakery from Crawford and a mother from Brooklyn, Pauline Vos.

On Friday there will be a live studio audience, with the breakfast team chatting to the Cake Boss from 8.30am to 9am, followed by a photo opportunity from 9am to 9.20am.
