Cape Town - Popular dairy brand Parmalat is recalling a batch of 200ml UHT PureJoy Apple Juice because it was contaminated with cleaning chemicals.

The company received complaints that were confirmed and which resulted in urgent action being taken.

Parmalat spokesman André Mahoney said on Monday night that initial investigations pointed to a factory problem that led to the release of “a small number of packs” being contaminated with cleaning chemicals.

Parmalat warned that the juice was unfit for consumption.

“All the unsold affected products have already been recalled from our distribution system, as well as, where possible, from the stores to which it had been distributed,” said Mahoney.

“Our records indicate that the distribution for primary sale was most likely limited to the Western Cape, but we recognise that consumers or distributors could have taken the product into other areas.”

He said an investigation of production records had enabled Parmalat to isolate the problem to a production time window of less than five minutes.

The company stressed that no other products were affected by the contamination and that it was continuing investigations.

Consumers who have purchased the contaminated PureJoy Apple Juice with the best before date of December 14, 2015 and December 15, 2015 are urged to phone 0860 66 44 22 or e-mail [email protected] for collection and a refund.
