London - Red wine improves cholesterol, even in people already taking statins, a Belgian study has found.

Patients with atherosclerosis (furred-up arteries) made changes to their diet and exercised for 30 minutes a day for 20 weeks.

Half also drank a glass of red every day — 100ml for women, 200ml for men. More than half the group were already taking cholesterol-lowering statins.

Those who had wine improved the ratio of bad (LDL) to good (HDL) cholesterol by 13 percent. For those who made only the lifestyle changes, it was eight percent.

Researchers suggested this could be due to antioxidants, called polyphenols, in red wine. - Daily Mail
