London - Vegetarians and fish eaters are less likely to develop kidney stones than meat eaters.
Men and women have a one in ten lifetime risk of developing kidney stones, but new research at Oxford University shows that the likelihood varies with diet.
The study based on data from more than 50 000 people, shows that compared with those who ate more than 100g of meat a day — the equivalent of one burger — vegetarians had a 31 percent lower risk of stones.
For people who ate fish, the risk was 27 percent lower than for the meat eaters.
The most common type of kidney stone is made up of calcium oxalate, a waste product in urine, and excessive meat intake has been linked to high oxalate in the urine. - Daily Mail
