London - Women who dyed their hair for more than ten years had higher levels of testosterone, according to Japanese researchers.

A study published in the European Journal of Public Health involving more than 400 women aged 20 to 54 found that testosterone levels were 14 percent higher in those who had used hair dyes (permanent and non-permanent) for ten or more years than in women who had never used them.

While it’s not clear why hair dye might have this effect, research suggests that some of the 5 000 or so chemicals in hair dyes may have hormone-altering effects and could increase testosterone production.

Excess testosterone in women is linked to acne and fertility problems.
