Johannesburg - Eco-friendly outdoor gyms are fast becoming a trend not only in South Africa but across the border as well, says 49M, the energy-saving campaign.

The outdoor gyms were first introduced to South Africa in 2008 to provide health and fitness to the masses, especially those who cannot afford commercial gyms.

The first gym was installed at the Petrus Molefe Park in Soweto. The uptake has seen the gyms being installed in more than 90 parks in Gauteng alone.

This phenomenon has done well reaching across both ends of the spectrum. Outdoor gyms can be found from Eldorado Park, south of Joburg, to the northern suburbs of Joburg and in other provinces as well.

“49M is about a better future for all South Africans economically, socially and environmentally. Innovations such as this one talk directly to the core objective of the campaign which is to encourage individuals and corporates to lead energy smart lifestyles,” said Tim Hogins, managing director of Green Outdoor Gyms, the company that installs the equipment.

“While the gym provides residents with an opportunity to get fit and enjoy healthy living, we are thrilled with the fact that the gym equipment uses no electricity, which means that the energy that could have been used to operate treadmills and bikes can now be channelled where it is needed the most or directed to the reserves for future use,” said Hogins.

“This is an important factor in an energy scarce country like South Africa. We have a wide range of equipment catering for athletes, adults, children and physically impaired individuals.”

He added: “It introduces citizens to a lifestyle revolution that allows them to become advocates of energy efficiency.

“As we embrace the holiday season, give your family the ultimate gift, give them the gift of life. Encourage both young and old to spend more time outdoors.

“The outdoor gyms are free, user friendly and open to all.”

According to the Medical Research Council, it is estimated that more than 29 percent of men and 56 percent of women in South Africa are classified as overweight or obese.

Lack of physical activity is a major contributing factor to this obesity epidemic which, if not managed, can lead to health risks such as coronary heart disease.

Consistent visits to the gym could be just the solution to curb weight-related health risks.

Now you can pay a visit to your local park, taking along your family, and work off those festive calories. – The Star
