London - While it may ease a pounding head, it can irritate the stomach lining, making you more sick and queasy.

“Ibuprofen is an acidic compound that causes a reaction when it hits the stomach, and removes its protective lining,” says Sultan Dajani of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

There is a lot of misunderstanding about this drug, adds Dr Louise Selby, a Surrey GP. She says many of her patients take ibuprofen after a night out, without realising it can exacerbate nausea, and has the potential “to cause internal bleeding, particularly when mixed with alcohol”.

TRY THIS INSTEAD: A better option is paracetamol — and lots of water. “Paracetamol will deal with pain without irritating the stomach because it doesn’t start working until it enters the bloodstream and is activated by the liver,” says Sultan Dajani.

“A hangover is also caused by dehydration, so you need to replace lost fluids.” - Daily Mail
