London – Ibuprofen has the edge on paracetamol for pain, according to scientists at Oxford University.

The drugs have long been used as painkillers, and, although paracetamol is often used first, there’s been no consensus about which is better.

But the new analysis, based on more than 20 studies, showed ibuprofen was consistently superior to paracetamol in treating the symptoms of painful conditions including osteoarthritis and migraine.

The results question the practice of routinely using paracetamol as a first line painkiller, the researchers wrote in the European Pain Journal. They stressed, however, that neither drug will be effective for everyone.
