London - Britain’s newlyweds sell two-thirds of their unwanted wedding presents online, a report has claimed, with the remainder left to gather dust in the back of a cupboard or passed on to others.

The research, carried out by Debenhams Wedding Service, found that as much as £25.4-million is wasted by friends and family every year on wedding presents for the happy couple.

Topping the list of unwanted gifts was artwork, followed by ornaments, kitchenware and exercise equipment - a huge waste of money, as according to the report the average gift costs guests £44 (about R800).
