London - It’s a symbol of love and commitment, but a fifth of young married Britons say they remove their wedding ring before going out.

Many take it off because they think they will get more attention from the opposite sex, a study of 2 000 married couples found.

Others do so after a row or because it was uncomfortable.

More than 80 percent of men who headed out without their ring were caught by their wives – and only half managed to talk their way out of it, according to the poll carried out by law firm Slater & Gordon.

Couples under 40 are more likely to wear a wedding ring than previous generations, but also more likely to remove it. One in eight said they would be judged as “boring” if people knew they were married, while more than a third said they had a better chance of winning business if they appeared single.

Men were most likely to take their ring off before socialising, while women were more likely to do so after a fight. Ten percent of people even thought their ring was seen as a “challenge” by the opposite sex.

Family lawyer Kaleel Anwar said rings are just “a materialistic symbol”. “It won’t stop someone straying and essentially a ring comes off very easily,” he added. - Daily Mail
