London - As the fearsome Joan Holloway, she spent years giving advice to the young secretaries on TV’s Mad Men.

And it seems actress Christina Hendricks, 40, has taken a leaf out of her character’s book, dispensing marriage guidance that could have been plucked straight from the drama’s 1960s setting.

The five-time Emmy nominee, who has been married to actor Geoffrey Arend, 37, for six years, has revealed her secret for marital bliss.

In an interview with Red Magazine, the star speaks about the importance of seeing things from your husband’s point of view and of women learning to “say ‘yes’ more than ‘no’”.

She said: “One thing I’ve realised with my husband is if something’s not going right, you need to stop and really look through their eyes, because there’s a reason you fell in love and they’re not trying to be mean. You need to stop and see what they’re seeing because it’s important to them and you respect them. Really listen. And learn to say ‘yes’ more than ‘no’, sometimes they just want to hear ‘yes’, and that’s fine.”

She says that her “sensitivity” influenced her character Joan Holloway in Mad Men, with the series creator Matthew Weiner infusing her personality into the sexy office manager turned junior partner.

With the show on the home stretch, Christina is concentrating on her next career move.

This year she appeared in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut Lost River, and will be seen next in a new Gillian Gone Girl Flynn film, Dark Places, and 10 episodes of Comedy Central’s Another Period.
