London - True romance is flowers, chocolates... and going shopping together, according to men.

Although amorous gestures traditionally mean a bouquet and sweet treats, millions of men think mundane or trivial acts are just as effective.

More than one in ten believe simply remembering an anniversary and buying a gift is a show of romance.

Others consider it romantic when they say they love a partner more than their football team, cancel their own plans to take them out or spend time with their other half’s family. Waiting in the rain for a partner to arrive and using the Skype video messaging system to speak online while apart were also listed.

The study of 2 000 Britons, commissioned by coffee brand Carte Noir, also found 55 percent of women wish their partner was more romantic. One in four say simply staying off Facebook while watching TV or having a meal together is a great way to show your feelings for one another.

Carte Noir spokesperson Jana Kucerova said: “The results show that whilst romance isn’t dead, the way partners choose to express their feelings has changed.

“From the stereotypical gestures we traditionally associate with romance such as red roses and candlelit meals, to everyday small gestures.”
