London - They say that you can’t put a price on love – but apparently Britons are spending more than ever on looking for it.

Singletons spend an average of £120 (about R2 300) on a date, coming to £1 304 a year on dinner, drinks, gifts, clothes and cosmetics.

This generates more than £4-billion for the British economy. A study, by dating website match.com and The Centre of Economic Business Research, shows British singles spent almost three times more per date than other Europeans, with Italians spending an average of £43, the Germans £39 and the French just £31 per date.

The study also showed that a third of the UK’s total dating spend is down to products to impress partners, such as clothes, cosmetics and even pre-date gifts.

Last year £175-million was spent on gifts, up from £120-million in 2013.

Dinner and drinks remains a staple of the British dating scene, with £2.2-billion spent on entertaining – a figure that has seen a £203-million increase from 2013.

Karl Gregory, of match.com, said: “The huge growth of mobile dating means singles have a wealth of potential partners at their fingertips so UK singles find it more important than ever to look their best and go the extra mile to impress their date.”
