London – Women dominate the conversation on speed dates, a study has found. Contrary to expectations, men took a subservient role with the women at the centre of the conversation.
“We assumed men would talk about themselves. We were surprised to find that this wasn’t true,” said Professor Dan Jurafsky of Stanford University in California.
“What we found was women in successful dates talked more about themselves,” he said.
“Men talked about the woman more, they used the word ‘you’ more. Men were much more supportive.”
The study was based on the four-minute conversations between 20 men and 20 women who knew they were being recorded as part of an experiment, but did not know the details of the research.
