London – Drinking milk after exercise lowers calorie intake later in the day, a new study has found.
Women who drank a glass of skimmed milk after cycling for 30 minutes ate 25 per cent less at a subsequent meal than women who drank orange juice.
The finding, by Northumbria University, was based on a small study of nine women.
They all ate the same breakfast.
Five minutes after working out on an exercise bike for half an hour, the women drank 600ml (around a pint) of milk or juice.
An hour later they were given a pasta meal, and the amounts they ate were recorded.
It’s thought the proteins in milk may trigger greater feelings of fullness than juice.
