London - A third of women do not check their breasts regularly for signs of cancer, according to a survey.

And many are unaware of signs of breast cancer other than lumps.

Most, 96 percent, knew a lump ought be checked but 39 percent did not know to look for redness or a rash.

About 28 percent did not know that a nipple becoming inverted can be a symptom, the survey of more than 1 100 women for the charity Breast Cancer Care found. And a fifth of those who did not check their breasts did not know how to do it properly.

Experts suggest checking every four to six weeks – about 11 percent of those 55 and over who did not check rely on three-yearly mammograms.

In 2011, more than 50 000 women in the UK were diagnosed with breast cancer and about 11 000 died.

Breast Cancer Care chief executive Samia al Qadhi said: “We know earlier detection can mean more effective treatment. Make today the day you start getting to know your breasts.”
