London - Mothers who work part-time make better employees – because they do not waste time sitting on Facebook with a hangover, a British Labour frontbencher has claimed.

Labour’s childcare spokesman Lucy Powell called for a change in an office culture that tends to see part-time workers as “lower-status employees”.

Far from being less productive, those working only a few days a week are often squeezing the work of a full-time employee into fewer hours, she claimed.

Miss Powell, who gave birth to son Tom in May last year, went on to say that she wanted to “champion working moms”, adding: “We need to put these issues centre stage as they are incredibly important. They are issues of fundamental inequality. “We need to show companies more women who manage a career whilst working part-time so we can debunk the myth that we are less productive.

“We are not sitting on Facebook or coming in with a hangover. When we work we are making the most of every minute of every day.” - Daily Mail
