London - He was once named one of the world’s sexiest vegetarians. But the accolade no longer applies to Chris Martin.

The singer revealed on Wednesday that since his “conscious uncoupling” from his marriage to Hollywood’s best-known vegetarian Gwyneth Paltrow – and the no-meat lifestyle that came with it – he is now a carnivore again.

“I am not really vegetarian. I eat meat,” the 37-year-old Coldplay frontman said in an interview with Steve Wright on Radio 2. “I was vegetarian for a long time but for various reasons I changed.

“My daughter (Apple, 10) has been a vegetarian since she was born. I keep getting tempted to go back but I don’t eat too much meat. The honest answer why I changed is because I thought you can only eat something that you should be able to kill.

“I mean, could you kill a fish? I would not like it but I probably could eat the fish,” adding jokingly: “...or a giraffe.”

Paltrow’s enthusiasm for following a vegetarian diet is well-documented and she has written a cookbook and blogged about the health benefits of a regime rich in plants and seeds.

So stringent is her approach to diet that she once admitted her whole family could at times feel hungry because she did not allow them to eat carbohydrates such as bread, pasta or white rice.

The Oscar-winner announced on her Goop lifestyle website in March that she and Martin were “consciously uncoupling” after 10 years.

The break-up between Paltrow, 41, and the Exeter-born singer appears to be amicable and the pair have even been spotted out together since, looking comfortable in each other’s company.

Paltrow wrote on her website at the time of the announcement that she and Martin had tried in vain to save their marriage for more than a year but that they would always be a family and their main concern was the welfare of their children. They also have a son, eight-year-old Moses.

When asked how he deals with such a major personal upheaval while performing, Martin replied: “My job is so uplifting and that naturally is an endorphin.

“If you are going through something difficult in life, music for me is always a friend and something that helps me figure things out.”
