London - The era of the supermodel is over according to Cindy Crawford, who says modern magazines prefer celebrities on their covers instead.

Crawford, who rose to fame in the 1990s as the darling of the fashion industry, said she believed she had already lived through the ‘heyday’ of modelling as opportunities for her successors shrink.

She said models were no longer receiving exposure in magazines and advertising because editors and companies preferred to employ singers and actresses.

Referring to her own professional success, Crawford, 48, told ES Magazine that the ‘stars were in alignment’ to allow her to become a household name through modelling, before tastes changed.

She said: ‘Models are not really getting covers now, and they’re not getting the big cosmetics contracts and that’s where the money is. It’s actresses and singers and reality TV people.’

Crawford, who was named the highest-paid model in the world by Forbes in 1995, has graced the covers of countless fashion magazines, as well as creating her own fitness videos, calendars and starring in advertising campaigns.

She added: ‘The reason supermodels could come into being was because Hollywood actresses wanted to be taken seriously. They didn’t want the red carpet to be a catwalk, which it has now become.’
