London - Spotting a grey hair usually has women running to the hairdressers to have their roots done and banish the greys – but imagine embracing your natural colour and bravely showing off your silver locks to the world.

That is exactly what 54-year-old Nicky Griffin from Nottingham decided to do, having started to turn grey at the age of 47.

Fed up with lengthy salon appointments and the expense of dyeing her hair, Nicky chose to ditch the dye and let nature take its course.

Now she is modelling for an exciting new range for women with glorious white hair like her, after being scouted at a cashpoint.

‘I have completely changed my make-up,’ Nicky says. ‘When I had black hair I wore bright-red lipstick. Now I go for rose or pale pink shades, which are much softer.

‘I now wear lavender eyeshadow, which makes my blue eyes really stand out.

‘I can also wear a lot more coloured clothing and I steer clear of boring black, which tends to wash me out.’

The good news is silver hair has been described as one of the hottest shades for 2015, so there has never been a better time to ditch the dye.

Founder of White Hot Hair, Jayne Mayled, 57, from Nottingham, was inspired to create a line of products to care for our greys when she let her own colour grow through.

It features a very glamourous grey-haired Nicky on its website, which launches today (whitehothair.co.uk).

‘I was most surprised by the reaction of other people when I stopped dyeing my hair,’ Jane said. ‘Younger women saw it as a fashion statement, but older friends were less sure.

‘I forget that I have grey hair and I certainly don’t think of myself as old!’

Jane is adamant that: ‘It’s not about age, and certainly not about letting yourself go.

‘It is just embracing a new look. When you start to dye you hair, it’s easy to forget what colour is underneath the dye: it could be beautiful and bright white, a steely pewter or multi-tonal salt and pepper.

‘I found it absolutely liberating to discover my very own shade of grey.’

Celebrity colourist Daniel Galvin says that making the decision to finally give up the dye is a life-changing moment.

‘It can be a painful process and invariably your hair may look worse before it gets better,’ he warns. ‘One of the salon tricks we do to help alleviate that painful growing-out process is to simply colour your parting and hairline while growing out the rest of your hair.

‘Then when there is sufficient “virgin” hair, we simply switch your parting and you are a beautiful, natural-looking, Helen Mirren colour, which can also be enhanced by a few creamy highlights to give a softer effect.’
