Fear and loathing in the mall

Who can stand waiting in queues filled with crying kids and overpacked trolleys?

It is alleged that women like shopping.

Indeed, an otherwise sensible IOL Lifestyle story about personal finance issues, carried this paragraph: “Millions of women do love handbags - and shopping generally - with a passion the average red-blooded male finds incomprehensible.”

Millions of women love shopping? Really?

Almost every woman I know says she hates shopping - whether for groceries or handbags.

They hate the noise, they hate finding parking in malls, they hate having to make so many choices, they hate trying to do it with children in tow. They hate how much things cost and they hate not finding the things they want. They hate how they look in the mirrors of fitting rooms.

I hate all those things but a special category of my hatred is reserved for other people’s inability to manage a shopping trolley. There are supermarkets I simply won’t go to because the aisles are too narrow and I’m filled with the desire to murder almost everyone in the shop when I can’t get past their trolleys.

I have noticed though that there are women who say they hate shopping yet do it all the time. So is it fashionable to say you hate it when actually you love it?

My best shopping experience recently: going to Woolworths, selecting three pairs of black pants, paying and being back in the waiting husband-driven car within ten minutes. I tried them on when I got home and they all fitted, thanks to the fact that my body is a standard Woolies size. - IOL
