London - The wafting aroma of freshly baked bread is the British nation’s favourite smell, according to a survey.

It beat sizzling bacon, newly mown grass and coffee to the title.

The top ten also included cakes baking in the oven, the seaside, just-laundered clothes, a Sunday roast, fish and chips and fresh flowers.

More unusual scents to make the top 50 favourite smells included rain, at number 28, new books, at 31, petrol at 36, and burning matches at 37.

Homely smells were extremely well-loved, with fresh paint, new carpets, furniture polish and the fragrance of a newly built house all among the favourites.

Stuart Hobbs from decorating brand Harris, which conducted the poll, said: “So many of the top smells are associated with home, which really confirms to us home is where the heart is.”

Food and drink smells also featured heavily in the list, with coconut, fresh lemon and doughnuts proving popular in the poll of 2 000 adults.

Researchers found that for 60 percent of adults there are certain smells that conjure up memories of particular people or places.

More than three-quarters said particular smells make them feel nostalgic.

Eighty-four percent also said they always make sure their home smells fresh, with the majority opting for room sprays, open windows and regular cleaning sessions.
