London - Offices should be turned into playgrounds with Xboxes and massages – even a company pet – to boost output and cut sick days among young workers, according to research.

Companies that make work fun have higher levels of productivity and profit, research by a leading psychologist and employment experts found.

The claims are based on a study of so-called Millenials aged 16-24, and what motivates them to do well.

Nearly 80 percent believe having fun is the most important aspect of work, with 44 percent saying having a period of “playtime” made them more productive.

The attitudes threaten a clash of culture with older workers and executives who might have a more traditional approach to hard work. Just 14 percent of 55-60-year-olds said they liked “playtime” at work and only four in ten enjoyed having a laugh in the office.

The research was conducted by business psychology company Robertson Cooper, founded by Professor Sir Cary Cooper, who said young workers want rewards for long hours.

He added: “Businesses must decide how to educate their senior leaders about how the different expectations of Millennials.”
