London - As New Year parties loom, many people are suffering from “fomo” or even declaring “yolo”.

“Fomo” stands for “fear of missing out” while “yolo”, typically used to justify excessive extravagance, is an acronym for “you only live once”.

But now there is a new abbreviation relating to social worries: “fosy” — “fear of saying yes”.

According to event planners, more and more people are not responding to invitations in case they receive better party offers.

Besides being rude, this lack of a RSVP makes it impossible for hosts to know how many people to cater for.

According to Debrett’s, the guide on society etiquette, guests should always reply to invitations in writing and stick to them. Unless, of course, you are really a “somo” — a selfish oaf with manners of an oik! - Daily Mail
