London - It’s a day which comes to us all but our funerals have not usually been a popular topic of conversation.

Until now, that is, as higher numbers of the over-50s are willing to tackle the delicate subject head on.

Two-thirds are happy to discuss arrangements for the ceremonies to mark their passing, according to a survey.

As older generations become more willing to talk openly, funerals are increasingly being seen as positive events.

Nearly seven in ten over-50s would like theirs to be a celebration rather than a sombre occasion, said retail analyst Mintel.

Its lifestyles expert Ina Mitskavets said an ageing population means more Britons are coping with the needs of elderly relatives and having to confront their own mortality.

Women are more in favour of celebratory funerals, with three-quarters backing the idea. Nearly one of five people have written a specific set of instructions for the day while a quarter of the 900-plus surveyed have put four or more steps in place.

But 20 percent do not care what type of final send-off they receive and only four in ten said religion was important.

The funeral market is worth £2-billion-plus, up from £1.5-billion in 2009, said Mintel.

The average cost is £3 609. Three in ten have savings ready to pay the bills and more than half said the costs would come from their estate. More than a quarter have an insurance plan to cover the expenses. - Daily Mail
