London - They may be faced with mountains of student debt and difficult job prospects, and might struggle to get a mortgage – but young adults are happy and getting happier, an official survey has found.

A report based on the British government’s life satisfaction measures revealed that eight out of every ten in their late teens and early twenties now say they are “very satisfied” with their lives.

Since 2011, the share of young people recording very high levels of happiness has gone up from 71 to 74 percent, and the number of youngsters reporting very low anxiety levels has risen from 63 to 66 percent.

The Office for National Statistics report suggested that broadly, people below the age of 24 are very happy because of the “increase in freedom, independence and self-focus associated with the emerging adulthood life stage”.

The poll found that as they get older and become burdened with responsibilities, life becomes grimmer – with the least happy people in their 40s and 50s. However encouragingly, the report said people’s levels of happiness tend to “bounce back” when they retire. - Daily Mail
