Durban - High fashion, high heels and high hair – they were all there in abundance at the Ethnic Hair Show.

Stylists, salon owners, suppliers and wholesalers – 1 000 of them – came together to learn as much as they could about products, styling techniques, what’s in, what’s out, what works and what doesn’t.

Rupert Mpanza, head stylist at Inecto hair brand, said big hair is a winner this season.

“People like drama,” he said.

“The higher and bigger the better – and this applies to hair and shoes.”

Salon owners and stylists watched in fascination as experts worked their magic with weaves, wigs, extensions, lock styles, treatments, children’s hair, relaxers and more.

In the evening, it was show time as models took to the ramp to showcase glamorous outfits by flamboyant Durban designers Kevin Ellis and Gareth Greaves.

Creative director Evan Roberts said clothes were selected to match the hair.

“Ethnic hair is so versatile,” he said. “You can have a sleek, elegant style for the day, which you can change by clipping on braids, buns or a weave, before you head out at night. We had a lot of fun matching the clothes to the hair.”

The event, hosted by Jumbo Cash and Carry at the Blue Waters Hotel, was a first for the wholesaler and organisers said in the light of the “overwhelming” interest, it was likely to be rolled out to other provinces and repeated in Durban next year. – Daily News
