Makeup magic

With a shift towards lighter make-up palettes and nixing heavy foundation, it’s time to play up your eyes and lips with a few bright hues for the season. Top 2011 summer make-up trends include bold and bright lips, smoky eyes with a splash of colour, and showing off natural, luminous skin.

Whether you’re hitting the town for a special date or relaxing with the girls on the weekend, this is the perfect time to freshen up your look with a few bold hues.

Multi-shade eyes:

Play with a bright and sunny yellow eye shadow or heat things up with orange or red on the lids, mix layers of coloured eye shadow and finish off with a super-thin line of eyeliner. Use a complementary base colour all the way up to the eyebrow and dust with a shimmering powder up to the edges of your eyes for the full effect.

Coloured eyeliner:

If bright shades on your eyelids are not your thing, play with a brightly coloured eyeliner pencil instead. Applying a thick line of blue, orange, green or purple eyeliner just along the edges of your eyes and around the rim can be enough to add an edgy twist to your look. Keep the lips neutral.

Shapely brows:

Well-groomed brows are the name of the game this summer, not too thick and not too thin, so don’t over-pluck in hopes of filling in with a layer of brow powder. Take the time to shape your brows to get that perfect arch, and use a brow powder to accentuate your existing brows.

Bold lips:

Summer 2011 trends are more focused on luscious, juicy-looking lips infused with orange, cherry red and bright pink hues. Look for moisture-rich lipsticks or super-shiny glosses in these bright colours to pull off the look. Just remember to keep the rest of your make-up fairly neutral. Go easy on the eye make-up and only use a light dusting of blush or bronzer on your cheeks.

Glowing and luminous skin:

The natural make-up look is back for another season, and you can achieve that luminous glow with a layer of tinted moisturiser or mineral make-up. If you need more coverage, use a little product and blend, blend, blend. Creating that natural sheen is easier with a light dusting of illuminating powder and a hint of bronzer on the cheeks.

Whatever the vibe, this season’s make-up is big on brave statements, experimental textures, handsome femininity and, above all, an excitement about putting the art back in artistry.

Here’s how to get the looks illustrated here

Pop Classics

Turn up the intensity with pop classics and über-saturated colour. Take a precise lip or sleek liquid liner and turn it on its head with chemical orange, fluorescent hibiscus pink and acerbic magenta. A hot, energetic look worn with a counterbalance of low-key skin colour and mascara-less lash. It’s following the dominant fashion idea of colour blocking and translating it to the face.

Modern bronze, precise application and tan shades have been given an intelligent rethink this season. Think ‘70s in spirit, sculptured cheekbones in honey buff tones and lips lushed up in caramel lacquer. It’s healthy, satiny and sunned at its most specific.
