London - The start of a new relationship can be a thrilling time.

But instead of gazing longingly into their partner’s eyes, many women are anxiously checking their own reflections – in case their make-up needs a touch up.

Women wait four weeks and one day, on average, before they show their bare face to a new boyfriend, according to a study.

Six out of ten want to be sure a man really likes them before going without make-up.

In the meantime, the survey found, some think nothing of nipping to the bathroom in the middle of the night or getting up early to ensure their new beau doesn’t witness their bedraggled morning appearance.

And for a first date, all the stops are pulled out, with women spending at least 40 minutes getting ready – including picking the perfect dress and doing their hair.

Nine out of ten said they want a new man to think they are always perfectly turned out.

Nearly half of women worry a new partner would find them less pretty without make-up, while a fifth think their guys would be shocked by how different they look.

The survey of 2 000 single women by cosmetics retailer Superdrug revealed a third believe that if they did not wear make-up, a new relationship would not go anywhere.

The same proportion said that they would not be as successful with the opposite sex if they never wore make-up at all.

Fear of looking older and exposing unwanted wrinkles are other reasons why women reach for the cosmetics bag before meeting a new man.

Six in ten claim they are extremely careful a new boyfriend never sees them without make up, and reapply it frequently during the course of a date.

But it’s not just on the dating scene that make-up is an important part of many women’s daily routine.

Of those questioned, 32 percent would hate for work colleagues to see them without make-up, while 20 percent couldn’t face the boss and 31 percent would most hate to bump into an ex-partner.

Superdrug spokesperson Sarah Sharp said: “Many women consider going au naturel in front of a new partner quite a serious step, they are exposing themselves completely.” - Daily Mail
