London - It’s been quite a year for Nigella Lawson, and at every turn she’s worked the look to her advantage. Her reward is the cover of April’s Vogue magazine, where we find her resplendent in green lace and this season’s hottest make-up look: “The ingenue”.

What’s that you say? How on earth can a 52-year-old divorcee possibly be described as an “ingenue”?

Ah well, you see: that’s the power of make-up. The natural look is very much of the moment, which is great news for older women. Because, contrary to popular belief, the older you get the less make-up you should be wearing. Visible make-up, that is.

Nigella’s Vogue look is a masterclass in how to make sheer tones and barely-there tints work to your advantage. Okay, she’ll have been airbrushed; but the principles remain.

A fresh base is key. Skin should be well-moisturised beforehand, and you want a light-to-medium weight foundation.

For cheeks, aim for a soft bloom, the kind of colour you get from spending a few hours in the sun on a spring day.

For lashes – a wonderfully natural finish that yet still builds up sparse lashes.

Lastly, lips – and here it has to be nude. Sales of nude or natural lipsticks have risen dramatically recently, with sheer lips dominating even glitzy red-carpet events.
